So Jean Valjean went to the Thenardiers, the family that had Cossette. Cossette was treated poorly at the Thenardiers. They beat her and she never got to play with the other kids. She did all the chores. When they were about to throw her out, Jean Valjean saved her and payed fifteen francs. After that, Jean Valjean spoiled her. She had nice dresses and dolls. But when Cossette got older and met Marius, Jean Valjean got jealous and wanted Cossette to himself. But when Marius got badly wounded in the French Revolution, Jean Valjean saved him. She makes yarn dolls for her cousins, helps out with the babies, Pepe and Lupe, helps her mother, works out in the field,and even sweeps the platform at their Mexican camp. No wonder esperanza means hope in Spanish!
